Opening statements start in trial of man accused of murdering his spouse and one other man

Opening statements started Tuesday within the trial of a Virginia man accused of murdering his spouse and one other man whereas carrying on a romantic relationship along with his household’s au pair.

Brendan Banfield is charged with aggravated homicide within the February 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan on the Banfields’ house in northern Virginia.

Brendan Banfield and Juliana Peres Magalhães, the household’s au pair, initially advised investigators they shot Ryan after they discovered the stranger stabbing Christine Banfield within the bed room. Prosecutors say Banfield and Magalhães lured Ryan to the home and staged it to seem like they’d shot an intruder.
