Pro-Russian rebels in Transnistria, a separatist sliver of Moldova, have requested President Vladimir Putin to guard their area from what they declare are threats from Moldova’s authorities.
Transnistria, which illegally break up from Moldova because the Soviet Union crumbled, has remained firmly throughout the Kremlin’s orbit whereas Moldova, which borders Ukraine, is bidding to affix the European Union.
