Much of Spain and Portugal’s electrical energy transmission system collapsed in seconds, together with in main cities Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.
The reason for the outage is unclear. Portugal’s grid operator has blamed a "rare atmospheric phenomenon" that precipitated "anomalous oscillations" in excessive voltage energy traces in Spain.
