Members of the U.S. Figure Skating Team had been aboard American Airlines flight 5342 that collided with an Army Blackhawk helicopter in Washington, D.C. In a press release by U.S. Figure Skating, athletes, coaches and members of the family had been returning residence from the nationwide improvement camp held at the side of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.
