China kicks off two-day safety summit
Autocrats, populists, buddies and foes, a strongman waging a struggle in Europe and the chief of the world’s largest democracy will all be hosted by Chinese chief Xi Jinping this weekend at a summit designed to showcase Beijing as a world chief able to offering a counterweight to Western establishments.
Heads of state and delegations from throughout Asia and the Middle East will meet from Sunday within the Chinese port metropolis of Tianjin for the two-day summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a regional safety grouping that has emerged as a cornerstone of Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s drive to rebalance international energy of their favor.
