The Washington Commanders have parted ways with senior offensive assistant Jim Hostler, a source with knowledge of the situation said — marking another shakeup to coach Ron Rivera’s staff.
Hostler’s departure comes after Washington hired Eric Bieniemy to replace Scott Turner as offensive coordinator. The team is also bracing for the departure of wide receivers coach Drew Terrell, who is expected to join the Arizona Cardinals under new coach Jonathan Gannon. Outside of those two, former defensive backs coach Chris Harris left last month to become the Tennessee Titans’ defensive passing game coordinator and cornerbacks coach.
With at least two likely two vacancies on the offensive staff, that would allow Bieniemy to potentially bring any assistants with him as part of the transition. The NFL Network reported that Bieniemy will get a “chance to build his staff” upon taking the job, along with the opportunity to call plays and an additional title of assistant head coach.
Hostler joined Rivera’s staff in 2020 as the team’s wide receivers coach, though he moved into a senior offensive assistant role a year later. Though his title was vague, Hostler essentially served as the team’s passing-game coordinator and helped Turner formulate game plans.
The Commanders fired Turner in January, taking more than a month to replace him. The team interviewed a total of eight candidates, but landed on Bieniemy — a two-time Super Bowl-winning coach from the Kansas City Chiefs.
