Despite the crises in the Middle East, Joe Biden remains dedicated to addressing the issue of excessive fees.

President Biden once again utilized the influential platform of his position to emphasize the detrimental impact of “junk fees” on the American economy, consistently addressing this specific concern that has become a recurring theme for the White House.

Junk fees are unexpected or hidden costs tacked on to plane and concert tickets, hotel rooms, cellphone bills and other transactions.

From the Rose Garden, a location frequently utilized for significant events, Mr. Biden introduced his most recent suggested regulation. This regulation aims to prohibit businesses from imposing concealed or deceptive charges and mandates that companies display complete prices in advance.

Since October 2022, Mr. Biden has given a minimum of four speeches that specifically addressed excessive fees, with two of them occurring within the past six months.

The president has addressed the matter in overall discussions on the economy, during gatherings of his Competition Council, and has devoted significant attention to the subject in his State of the Union speech.

Mr. Biden remained laser-focused on the issue Tuesday, even as crises mount overseas following the Hamas terror attack on Israel, which included an unknown number of Americans being held hostage.

RNC Spokesperson Anna Kelly stated that Joe Biden is attempting to shift the focus of media attention, despite ongoing atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists in Israel, the unfortunate loss of 22 American lives, desperate pleas from families of kidnapped individuals, and Iran receiving $6 billion from US tax funds. Kelly criticized Biden’s policies as ineffective and expressed the readiness of Americans to bring about change.

The White House asserts that the focus on unnecessary charges is a component of Mr. Biden’s broader economic plan as it supports the disadvantaged group. They claim that it alleviates the impact of inflation, which has decreased in recent months but remains elevated. By presenting it as a matter that affects people’s finances directly, Mr. Biden aims to gain the support of voters who still have doubts about his economic management.

The new proposal by the president does not impose any restrictions on the pricing set by sellers. However, it does mandate vendors to provide upfront disclosure of the total expenses and grants the Federal Trade Commission the authority to penalize non-compliant companies.

The White House announced that the administration’s efforts to eliminate unnecessary fees have resulted in approximately $2 billion in savings for consumers and $140 million in refunds.

“I cannot reword”

Certain Republicans have opposed the initiative to regulate excessive charges, claiming that it resembles socialism due to its implementation of price controls.

“I cannot reword”

According to a survey conducted by polling company Navigator, there is strong bipartisan support for getting rid of junk fees, as shown by the majority of independents (64%) and Republicans (62%) who support the White House’s proposals. In total, 75% of Americans are against these fees.

However, it is seldom mentioned by pollsters when they inquire about the most significant concerns in the nation presently. It does not even appear on a Newsweek survey that prompts Americans to identify their primary concern leading up to the 2024 election.

The White House disagrees with the notion that the matter is not important to voters, asserting that it is indeed connected to their wider economic worries. According to the Newsweek survey, the economy is identified as the primary concern for voters in the upcoming 2024 elections, with healthcare and immigration following closely behind.
