Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff have all progressed to the semifinals in the China Open.

Elena Rybakina progressed to her eighth semifinal of the year after defeating the number one ranked player Aryna Sabalenka 7-5, 6-2 on Friday at the China Open.

In their third encounter this year, with each player winning one final in the previous matches, Rybakina, seeded fifth, displayed a commanding performance on her serve. She delivered 12 aces and successfully avoided any break points.

“I had a great performance today,” Rybakina expressed. “My serving was exceptional, so I am extremely pleased with how I played. Competing against Aryna is always challenging, but I genuinely enjoy facing her on the court.”

Rybakina will compete against Liudmila Samsonova in the semifinals. Samsonova, who is not seeded, won her previous match against Jelena Ostapenko, the 13th seed, with a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Sabalenka had only four aces and eight double-faults, including two in the 11th game of the first set, and was broken another three times in the second.

Iga Swiatek, who was seeded second, progressed to the next round after winning against Caroline Garcia with a score of 6-7 (8), 7-6 (5), 6-1.

With Swiatek serving to stay in the match in the second set, Garcia came within two points of closing out a straight-set win. However, Swiatek delivered two big points, pushing the match into a second tiebreaker.

Swiatek then powered through the decider to advance to her 11th semifinal of the season.

Coco Gauff, seeded third, continued her impressive winning streak of 16 matches by defeating Maria Sakkari with a score of 6-2, 6-4. This victory now paves the way for a semifinal match against Swiatek.

In the second round of the Shanghai Masters, Holger Rune, who was seeded third, suffered a defeat against Brendon Nakashima, ranked 122nd, with a score of 6-0, 6-2.

The 22-year-old American converted five of his 14 break points to claim a maiden victory over a top-10 player.

Nakashima will next play Zhang Zhizhen, who knocked out 28th-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In a rematch of the Chengdu Open final, Roman Safiullin emerged victorious with a 6-3, 6-1 win over the ninth-seeded Alexander Zverev.

Other players losing Friday included 11th-seeded Alex de Minaur, 17th-seeded Lorenzo Musetti and 14th-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Casper Ruud, among the limited number of seeded players, successfully progressed by defeating Yoshihito Nishioka with a score of 7-5, 6-0. In the next round, he will be up against Christopher Eubanks, the 29th seed, who made a comeback to defeat Yannick Hanfmann with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

On Saturday, Carlos Alcaraz, the player with the highest seed, and Daniil Medvedev, the player with the second-highest seed, will compete in their second-round matches.
