Foreign Secretary gives replace on UK response to Hurricane Melissa

The overseas secretary has made an announcement within the House of Commons forward of Hurricane Melissa making landfall in Jamaica, which the World Meteorological Organisation has warned is predicted to carry a couple of "catastrophic situation" on the island nation.

Yvette Cooper advised MPs that she spoke along with her Jamaican counterpart yesterday to supply "full support and solidarity", and make sure that the UK is "prepared to mobilise resources at their request".

The Foreign Office’s disaster centre is working 24 hours a day to help British nationals, with fast deployment groups transferring into place, and the Ministry of Defence can also be supporting their efforts.

"Any British nationals who are there should follow our travel advice and the advice of the Jamaican authorities," the overseas secretary stated.
