In the 11th inning, Kole Calhoun secures the winning hit, leading the Guardians to a 10-7 victory over the Blue Jays.

TORONTO — Kole Calhoun hit a tiebreaking double in the 11th inning and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-7 on Sunday.

Noah Syndergaard, the starting pitcher for the Guardians, gave up five runs and four hits, which included three home runs, during his six innings on the mound. It is worth noting that he was drafted by the same team in the first round back in 2010. However, after the game, the team decided to designate him for assignment.

The Guardians won two out of three games against Toronto, with José Ramirez and Ramón Laureano both hitting two-run home runs.

Calhoun expressed his optimism that the win would invigorate Cleveland prior to their upcoming three-game series against the leading team in the AL Central, Minnesota, which is scheduled to commence on Monday.

Calhoun expressed that the game was significant and he hopes to carry that positive energy into the most important series of the year. He believes it is a game that provides a solid foundation for future success.

Laureano had a batting average of .750, reaching base twice through walks, while Calhoun had a batting average of .600 with one walk. Both players crossed home plate three times.

“We are fortunate to have (Calhoun),” expressed Guardians manager Terry Francona. “Additionally, Laureano is contributing and making valuable contributions as well. They have been batting in the heart of the lineup and have performed admirably.”

Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. both smashed two-run homers, while George Springer contributed with a solo blast. However, despite their efforts, the Blue Jays fell short. Toronto has suffered defeats in four out of their last five games.

Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette left after five innings because of a sore right quadriceps. Bichette returned Aug. 19 after missing 16 games because of right knee tendinitis. Toronto went 8-8 without him.

Bichette had a score of 0 out of 3 before leaving. He started the day as the AL’s top hitter with 152 hits.

In the sixth inning, Toronto’s third baseman Matt Chapman was substituted by Whit Merrifield as a pinch hitter. Chapman had to be replaced due to inflammation in his right middle finger.

Manager John Schneider said Bichette is day-to-day. Chapman was expected to undergo an MRI.

“Bichette has experienced some discomfort but has continued to play,” Schneider explained. “We simply wanted to take precautions and ensure his well-being. I don’t believe he sustained any significant injury.”

Danny Jansen hit a double against left-handed pitcher Sam Hentges to start the ninth inning, but first baseman Calhoun managed to throw Jansen out at third base when Cavan Biggio attempted a sacrifice.

Calhoun, mainly a player in the outfield, has begun 14 games as a first baseman in the current season.

“I’m not entirely sure about my actions in that situation,” Calhoun playfully remarked. “The opportunity presented itself, and I believed I had a possibility of reaching third base, so I decided to take a risk.”

In the 11th inning, pitcher Jay Jackson intentionally walked Ramirez, resulting in runners on second and third base. Shortly after, Calhoun hit a double.

Laureano hit his eighth home run.

Emmanuel Clase (2-7) got the final five outs for the Guardians.

In the eighth inning, Andrés Giménez hit a double that brought in two runs, giving Cleveland a 6-5 lead. However, Toronto managed to tie the game in the bottom half when Daulton Varsho hit an RBI single.

Guerrero homered in the first off Syndergaard, his 20th. Cleveland tied it on Ramirez’s two-out homer in the third, his 21st.

Tyler Freeman and Myles Straw achieved RBI singles against Blue Jays’ left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi in the fourth inning. However, Springer’s 17th home run in the same inning reduced the score to 4-3.

Davis Schneider gave Toronto the lead by hitting a home run in the sixth inning, marking his fifth home run in 11 games at the major league level. The newcomer also hit another home run and achieved three hits in Saturday’s 8-3 victory.

Kikuchi gave up four runs and six hits in a span of six innings.
