Israel weighs plan to flood Hamas tunnels underneath Gaza Strip

Israel is contemplating flooding Hamas’ huge community of tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip with seawater pumped in from the Mediterranean Sea.

The operation is meant to drive out fighters hiding inside the phobia group’s subterranean passageways, in response to a report citing U.S. authorities officers.

In November, Israel constructed 5 seawater pumps close to the Al-Shati refugee camp in Gaza. The machines are able to shifting hundreds of cubic meters of water per hour and will flood the tunnels inside weeks, reported The Wall Street Journal.



The response from the White House was combined, with some officers fearing the influence on any hostages saved in Gaza. Others mentioned they proceed to again the Netanyahu authorities’s efforts to destroy the tunnel system.

Israel says Hamas makes use of the tunnel system to retailer weapons, disguise its leaders and shuttle terrorists among the many battlefield.

On Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces mentioned that since their floor offensive, they’ve found greater than 800 tunnel shafts within the Gaza Strip. The army is destroying them by setting off explosives or sealing openings.

“The brigade has located and destroyed more than 30 shafts until now in cooperation with other units,” Col. Yaniv Barot, commander of the IDF’s Kfir Brigade, mentioned on the military’s Telegram social messaging web page. “The cooperation with the air force is close and is very significant for operational success. We learn, improve and refine our capabilities every day, and we will continue to do so.”
