The Israeli navy says its forces have begun a "targeted ground operation" in southern Lebanon.
The Israel Defence Forces mentioned "localised and targeted raids" have been being carried out in opposition to Hezbollah targets close to the border with northern Israel.
"These targets are located in villages close to the border and pose an immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel," it mentioned.
Israel says it needs to take away the risk posed to communities in northern Israel and return round 70,000 residents to the world.
Hezbollah says it can cease focusing on northern Israel if it agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza.
