Keir Starmer faces MPs over Mandelson vetting course of

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer makes a press release to MPs within the Commons on Peter Mandelson’s safety vetting.

Starmer has confronted calls to resign for the appointment of Mandelson as US Ambassador after it emerged the Labour peer failed the vetting course of.

The PM claims he was "not aware" there was a advice towards giving Mandelson safety clearance for the ambassador position – which was overruled by the Foreign Office, in line with a doc produced by No.10.

At least two senior civil servants knew weeks in the past that Peter Mandelson had failed safety vetting for the position, Sky News understands.

Sir Olly Robbins – who Starmer sacked from the Foreign Office over the vetting difficulty – is ready to be grilled by MPs on the international affairs committee this week.
