The Latvian president, Edgars Rinkevics, has urged European nations to "absolutely" introduce conscription, as he conceded the continent was "quite weak" militarily.
He says there have been "ups and downs" when it comes to relations with America however says that European nations want to extend defence spending as "a lot of people are a little bit nervous".
Latvia launched conscription for males in 2023 and has pushed defence spending to 4% of the nation’s GDP. Mr Rinkevics says "seeing what is happening in the world, many other European countries need to follow that".
