McCarthy cautions GOP rebels that a government shutdown would only empower the Democrats.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy cautioned conservatives who are considering obstructing government funding legislation that a federal shutdown would work in favor of their political adversaries and hinder the Republicans’ policy goals.

“I cannot reword.”

Congress must pass funding legislation by month’s end to avert an Oct. 1 shutdown. Hardline House Republicans want more stringent spending cuts than what Mr. McCarthy and President Biden agreed to earlier this year during negotiations to avoid a default on the national debt.

Certain Republicans, including Rep. Matt Gaetz from Florida, are even going to the extent of issuing a warning to potentially remove Mr. McCarthy from his position as speaker.

“I think the most effective way to proceed is by approving appropriations bills to enhance our strength,” stated Mr. McCarthy. “Eliminate woke ideology and ensure the security of our border to strengthen America.”
