Baroness Jacqui Smith has defended Sir Keir Starmer’s dealing with of the sacking of Peter Mandelson.
It comes after accusations from opponents that the prime minister knew the true extent of Mandelson’s affiliation with the convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein earlier than being compelled to sack him.
But Baroness Smith denied this and stated: "Knowing the data we all know now, clearly Peter Mandelson would not have been chosen.
"That’s why when that information became clear last Wednesday afternoon, the prime minister quickly made the decision to remove Peter Mandelson."
