Minister says Jonathan Powell performed no function in resolution to halt China spy trial

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has insisted a high-profile authorities aide was not concerned in a choice to not halt authorized proceedings towards two males accused of spying for China.

The authorities mentioned the CPS had dropped the case towards Christopher Cash, 30, a former parliamentary researcher, and trainer Christopher Berry, 33, as a result of the earlier authorities had not designated China a menace to nationwide safety.

However, there had been hypothesis that Jonathan Powell, the nationwide safety adviser, was concerned within the resolution.

Ms Phillipson mentioned she "can give that assurance" that the case was not withdrawn due to the affect of Mr Powell.
