The prime minister has weathered a troublesome day with three critical assessments to his management.

It started with proof from ex-Foreign Office boss Sir Philip Barton concerning the appointment of Peter Mandelson because the UK’s ambassador to the US.

Morgan McSweeney, Sir Keir Starmer’s former chief of workers, was subsequent – he instructed MPs Mandelson’s appointment was a "serious error of judgement".
