TAIPEI—Taiwan misplaced diplomatic recognition from the Pacific island nation of Nauru as Beijing intensified its efforts to isolate Taipei simply days after Taiwanese voters elected a presidential candidate whom China condemns as a separatist.
Nauru’s authorities stated Monday that it could cease recognizing Taipei and as a substitute search formal relations with Beijing—a change that marks “a significant first step in moving forward with Nauru’s development,” in response to an announcement printed on the island nation’s Facebook web page.
