There’s extra to Tahiti than paradise seashores. Tony travels to French Polynesia in quest of its lesser-known sides: historical legends of cannibalism, a novel subsistence of transvestites, and the creative legacy of Paul Gauguin, whose work and life in Tahiti deeply impressed Tony. Riding by means of the jungle with Temetai, Tony explores the historical past of the fierce, tattooed Maori warriors and visits Ipona on Hiva Oa, house to centuries-old tikis and Maroian ruins. He meets Maurice and his son, who hold alive the Marquesian custom of identity-rich warrior tattoos—one in all which Tony receives himself, although not with no scolding for being a bit too buzzed on beer. The journey continues with a vibrant meal hosted by native legend Marie Antoinette and one other journey by means of Tahiti’s lush, hauntingly storied panorama.
