U.S.-Russian twin citizen Ksenia Karelina landed within the United States Thursday night after being launched from a Russian jail in an in a single day prisoner change.
Karelina was arrested in 2024 and convicted of treason. She was accused of organizing fundraisers for Ukraine’s navy, attending pro-Ukraine rallies and posting social media messages towards Russia’s warfare in Ukraine. The U.S. maintained she was wrongfully detained.
Karelina was exchanged for German-Russian citizen Artur Petrov, who’s accused of smuggling U.S. expertise to help the Russian navy. She was greeted by her fiancé, Chris van Heerden when she deplaned at Joint Base Andrews.
