A former director of public prosecutions has warned that the UK may very well be going through "criminal justice meltdown" if the federal government doesn’t take motion over jail overcrowding.
Speaking on Sky’s Politics Hub programme, Lord Macdonald mentioned: "This is a catastrophic failure of public policy that’s been in the making for many, many years, over many governments."
He added that he thinks the justice secretary’s plan to cut back overcrowding by releasing some prisoners after they’ve served 40% of their sentence is "completely warranted".
