US FCC makes AI-generated robocalls unlawful

The federal company that regulates communication within the US has made robocalls that use AI-generated voices unlawful.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) introduced the transfer on Thursday, saying it’s going to take impact instantly.

It offers the state energy to prosecute any dangerous actors behind these calls, the FCC stated.

It comes amid an increase in robocalls which have mimicked the voices of celebrities and political candidates.

“Bad actors are using AI-generated voices in unsolicited robocalls to extort vulnerable family members, imitate celebrities, and misinform voters,” stated FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel in a press release on Thursday.

“We’re putting the fraudsters behind these robocalls on notice.”

The transfer comes on the heels of an incident final month through which voters in New Hampshire obtained robocalls impersonating US President Joe Biden forward of the state’s presidential major.

The calls inspired voters to not forged ballots within the major. An estimated 5,000 to 25,000 had been positioned.

New Hampshire’s lawyer basic stated the calls had been linked to 2 corporations in Texas and {that a} felony investigation is underway.
