Opening statements are expected to begin in the penalty trial of Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz. Cruz pleaded guilty to 17 counts of first-degree murder in October 2021 for the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. Jurors will decide if Cruz will get the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
